1. "Daily searching is essential" is the phrase you will find on nearly all products registered for the prevention of the paralysis tick.

 

 

 

 


2.  Spot-Ons

Frontline PLUS

When used every 2 weeks Frontline PLUS will help to control the paralysis tick. Frontline PLUS is presented in a pipette which is applied to the skin on the back of neck of your dog. The active ingredient will migrate throughout the oil layer of the skin. Daily searching for ticks is still strongly recommended. Occasionally ticks will be found but they are general dead or dying and the signs of paralysis may not occur. [*only for dogs]

3.  Tick Collars

Preventic

Active ingredient: Amitraz which is neuro-toxic to ticks. The active is impregnated in a thin strip of PVC which slowly liberates enough amitraz into your dogs coat to kill ticks for up to 2 months.. The amitraz spreads over the whole body migrating though the oil layer of the skin. Daily inspection is still essential especially around the head and neck.

Kiltix

Active ingredient: Flumethrin a synthetic pyrethroid and Propoxur a carbamate. Both compounds work on the nervous system of the tick. Will control the paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) for up to 6 weeks. Also controls other ticks & fleas. Daily searching is still essential, may take up to a week to be active in dogs with thick coats ... [ more info ]

Rinses

 

Permoxin
Concentrate

Active ingredient: permethrin - a third generation synthetic pyrethroid (Synthetic pyrethroids are more light stable than naturally derived pyrethrins and therefore longer acting)
* Do not use on cats.
* Do not use on puppies <12 weeks old.
Permoxin can be used as a rinse or a spray. For paralysis it is best applied as a rinse every 7 days, daily searching for ticks is essential in paralysis tick areas.

Oral Medication

Proban

A tablet for the control of fleas & ticks. Given twice weekly for fleas or every second day for ticks (1 tablet per 10kg).
